ABSTRACT
Taiwan’s night markets are very famous in the world. It is even recommended by Cable News Network (CNN) as one of ten “need to go” places in Taiwan People who visit night markets are mostly attracted by the delicious food and cheap goods They create such profit revenue for business Unfortunately, there is one thing that most customers dislike: mess environment After digging deeper, we realize there are several reasons to lead to the mess environment Firstly, it is difficult for visitors to find the location of a trash bin when they need it Secondly, the trash bin is full of trash, so the surrounding area is even mess This research tries to find a solution based on the concepts and technologies of Internet of Things (IoT) and information Technologies In order to solve the above problem, we find three important things: 1 let the customers know where the trash bin is; 2 let the cleaner knows which bin is ready to be emptied; 3 for promotion and marketing purposes, the service must be fun and interesting so users would love to use and even bring more profits for the night market Our research is based on the idea of IoT, and is composed of software, a mobile application and a set of cloud services, and hardware, the smart trash bins, to create a smart environment system.
In order to achieve the first purpose, “let the customers know where the trash bin is”, location-based service is involved We use Global Positioning System (GPS) and Assisted Global Positioning System (AGPS) built on users' mobile devices and location-based services to show where the smart trash bins are Furthermore, in order to show a more accurate location of the smart trash bin, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and Beacon technologies are also involved for detailed location The second objective is “let the cleaner knows which bin is ready to be emptied”. We design the smart trash bin with Arduino and sensor components such as pressure sensor and infrared (IR) sensor The idea of “Wireless Sensor Network” help to fully manage all smart trash bins in night markets and report the amount of trash in every smart trash bin instantly and constantly In order to solve the final purpose, “To achieve promotion and marketing purposes, the service must be fun and interesting”, Therefore, we have gamification to avoid visitors to get bored or feeling trouble The gamification should also motivate users to use our mobile application Through interesting interaction and realistically reward, the user increases his or hers will to throw their trash into our smart trash bins.
Our gamification process is achieved by Near Field Communication (NFC), through data transmission between our mobile application and smart trash bin The transmitted data contains a unique identity which is generated during registration After the smart trash bin confirms the trash has been thrown into the smart trash bin, the user’s identity is sent to our cloud server via Wi-Fi Once our cloud server verifies, it sends a push notification to user’s mobile application, so the user can participate a lucky draw to win a coupon.
The basic development of internet, cloud computing, and the fourth generation of mobile communication technology standards (4G), brings out the development of Internet of Things (IoT) Nowadays Taiwan's IoT technologies are mostly used in data monitor However, in our smart environment system and smart trash bins, IoT is not only used as data monitor but also provides a special interaction between human and hardware Even more, with gamification concepts, we bring more fun to connect online and offline for visitors of night markets. Taiwan’s night markets are able to have a better image for all visitors Through our smart environment system and trash bins, with IoT and location-based service, a clean and smart environment can be achieved.
